Truecaller Launches Family Protection Feature to Shield Households From Rising Scam Calls

Truecaller has introduced a new household-level scam protection tool as part of its effort to move beyond caller ID amid a global surge in fraud targeting entire families.

The new feature, Family Protection, allows up to five people to join a shared protection group managed by one family member who acts as an administrator. The feature is now piloting for Android and iOS users in Sweden, Chile, Malaysia and Kenya.

Truecaller said the system is designed so that tech-savvy users can help safeguard elderly relatives or less digitally confident members from scam calls. On Android, administrators can receive alerts during suspicious calls affecting family members, check basic device status, and even remotely end fraudulent calls.

Scam attempts have risen sharply worldwide, especially in regions with many first-time smartphone users and older adults. Truecaller plans to expand Family Protection to more markets, including India, in early 2026.

CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said scammers are increasingly targeting entire households through coordinated attempts involving calls, messages and impersonation scripts aimed at multiple family members. This trend prompted the shift toward a multi-user protection system.

Family Protection is free for all users, while Premium Family subscribers will receive an ad-free experience and stronger spam and scam defenses. Truecaller, which has over 450 million users globally, detects about 63 million scam attempts daily and receives 166 million spam reports from its community, giving it one of the world’s largest fraud datasets.

The company is also strengthening its services amid competition from new regulatory initiatives, such as India’s Caller Name Presentation trials, which may reduce dependence on third-party caller ID apps.

Jhunjhunwala said the new feature ensures that “one person’s vigilance can strengthen safety for the entire household.”

Why This Matters

  • Scammers increasingly attack entire households, not just individuals.
  • They exploit gaps between tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy family members, especially seniors.
  • Coordinated calls, impersonation and missed-call triggers target multiple contacts until they find a weak point.

How Family Protection Helps

  • Centralised oversight: One family member can monitor scam alerts for the whole household.
  • Remote intervention: Administrators can stop suspicious calls before someone falls victim.
  • Useful for elderly users: Reduces risk for those who may not recognise scam patterns.

HackWarn Warning

Even with new protection tools:

  • Do not trust unknown calls, “official” requests for money, or urgent threats.
  • Always verify with the organisation using its official contact number, not the number shown on the call.

Truecaller’s feature is a useful layer of protection but awareness, validation and early reporting remain the strongest defence.
